Canada’s removal of the exemption requirement for snow crab havesters to fish ropeless sytems in zones closed due to sightings of North Atlantic Right Whales has had immediate benefits. Fishermen using Ashored Rope-on-Command ropeless technology were able to fish in the closed Zone 19 to close out their seasonal quota instead of leaving that valuable catch in the water. While still in its early stages, ropeless techonology is growing fast and with input from fishers can be driven in a direction to create a more effective, reliable tool. The ability to use ropeless to support crab and lobster harvesters while also protecting whales is here today.
