The Jonah Crab Gear Innovation Project is a basic FIP that is committed to trialing ropeless gear in real fishing conditions and providing feedback to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and gear manufacturers. Through participation in this GIP, fishers have the ability to get familiar with different ropeless systems while influencing future development of the equipment, thereby ensuring that ropeless gear is effective, safe, and easy to use. In the meantime, they are also removing static buoy lines from the water showing their commitment to protecting large whales, especially the North Atlantic Right Whale.
